•    Fabio Maselli was born in Florence (Italy) in 1961. In 1985, he received the "Laurea" Degree in Natural Sciences  from the University of Florence with an experimental thesis on the effects of marine surfactants on coastal vegetation. Next, he followed a six-month course on Electronic Data Processing. In 1987 he took the Laurea Degree in Biological Sciences with an experimental dissertation on the use of Landsat TM data for forest classification in rugged areas. In 2004 he took the PhD. degree in Vegetation Ecology presenting an experimental dissertation on the use of satellite data for monitoring vegetation in Italian coastal environments.
•    During his studies, he gained experience in the applications of computer sciences to agriculture and particularly in the use of multivariate statistical procedures for environmental analysis. Contemporaneously, he practiced in the use of several computer programming languages (Basic, Fortran 77, C,  Genstat 5) and learnt fluent English and some spoken and written French.
•    Since 1985 he has conducted investigations on the application of remote sensing data to environmental monitoring. In the period 1986-88 he has collaborated with the Centre for the Application of Computer Science in Agriculture (Ce.S.I.A.) of Florence. During this collaboration, he became expert in the application of multivariate statistical procedures to high spatial resolution satellite data for producing land cover inventories.
•    From 1988 to 1996 he has worked as a contract researcher in the Institute of Agrometeorology and Environmental Analysis for Agriculture (I.A.T.A.) of the National Research Council (C.N.R.) of Italy (presently Institute of Bio-meteorology, IBIMET-CNR). In 1996, after passing an examination, he got a post as permanent C.N.R. researcher at IBIMET-NCR. In this position he has continued his research activity on the use of high resolution remote sensing data for the assessment of the conditions of agricultural and forestry areas. In 2001, following another national examination, he was appointed as Senior C.N.R. researcher at IBIMET-CNR.
•    His present interest comprises the use of lower resolution imagery (NOAA-AVHRR, Spot-VGT, Envisat-MERIS, Terra-MODIS) for monitoring vegetation conditions on a regional scale, with particular enphasis on the assessment of vegetation productivity in European and sub-tropical countries. A specific research line concerns the integration of different satellite data with eco-physiological models to simulate forest production and crop yield.
•    In the period 1988-1995 he has taken part in national and international research projects. Among the former, there are the Project RAISA (Ricerca Avanzata Innovazione Sistemi agricoli), funded by the National Research Council of Italy and the collaboration with ASI (Agenzia Spaziale Italiana). Among the International Projects there are EPOCH (European Program On Climate Hazard), MEDALUS (Mediterranean Desertification and Land Use), Environment II FIRE (Integrated Assessment of Environmental Degradation Connected to Forest Fires in European Areas).
•    Starting from 1995 he has been scientific responsible for several other national and international scientific projects. Amon the formers, there are some projects financed by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and by the Tuscany Regional Government. Among the projects financed by the European Union, there are RESMEDES (Remote Sensing of Medeterranean Degradation and Environmental Stability), RESYSMED (Synthesis of change detection parameters into a land-surface change indicator for long term desertification studies in the Mediterranean area), CAMELEO (Changes in Mediterranean Semi-Aridi Ecosystems in the Long Term through Earth Observation), FOREMMS (Forest Monitoring and Modelling System), CIOMTA (Centro de Investigation Observation y Monitoreo Territorial y Ambiental), e-ECORISK (Regional Enterprise Network Decision Support System for Environmental Risk and Disaster Management of Large-Scale Industrial Spills).
•    His research activity is testified by numerous scientific publications, among which there are about 80 international papers published on the most widely known ISI journals of remote sensing nd environmental monitoring. (H-index = 20, ISI Web of Knowledge).
•    He is serving as a referee in the field of vegetation monitoring by the use of satellite data for the most important journals of remote sensing (Remote Sensing of Environment, International Journal of Remote Sensing, Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing, IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing). He is member of the scientific board of the European Journal of Remote Sensing.
•    Since 1988 he is collaborating as a lecturer with the University of Florence, and particularly with the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (Course of Agrometeorology, Prof. G. Maracchi, Prof. M. Bindi) and with the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences (Course of Geography, Prof. E. Pranzini).
