Reserach Interests
Environmental and applied soil physics;  Simulation models for water-heat, solutes and pollutants transport in structured soils; Indirect methods for estimating soil physical and hydrological properties: pedotransfer rules and functions, statistical networks, neural networks; Probabilistic and deterministic modelling for natural resources characterisation, evaluation and planning; Pedometrics for soil characterisation, analysis, prediction and mapping; Regionalized variables analysis applicable to agricultural research and field technology; Integration of soil related aspects of land management into microeconomic analysis of farming systems for multi-functionality assessment; Landscape and ecosystem services assessment and mapping.

Born in Rome, Nov.  15th 1965

1991 M. Sc. Degree with full marks in Tropical and Subtropical Agriculture, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Forestry, University of Florence, Italy. Final dissertation in Tropical and Subtropical Pedology: "Pedogenesis and Vertisols formation on the Ewaso N’giro- NE Kenya”.

1994: Post graduate researcher - Soil Science and Plant Nutrition Dpt., Univ. of Florence, Italy - EEC Research Contract STD3-CT92-0076 "Land Resources Inventory, Environmental Changes Analyses and Their Application in the Abaya Lake Region - Ethiopia".

1995: Ph.D. in Soil Science, University of Florence - Dissertation: "Probabilistic Approaches and Geostatistical Models for Detection, Monitoring and Cartography of Saline and Alkali Soils in the Albegna River Plain - South Tuscany".

1995 - 1996: OECD Post-doctoral fellowship in the framework of the "Co-operative Research Programme: Biological Resource management for sustainable Agricultural Systems", theme 4: "Surface and Ground Water Quality and Agricultural Practices: mathematical modelling of water quality and evaluation of the data", University of California at Davis, Land Air and Water Resources Dpt., Hydrologic Science - Field scale water-solute transport measurement and modelling of hydraulic parameters, directed by Prof. M.B. Parlange and D.R. Nielsen.

1997- 2001: Contract research scientist - Institute for Soil Genesis and Ecology (CNR IGES), Florence, Italy – research theme: Simulation models and pedotransfer functions for assessing soil proprieties influencing ground water quality.

20 Dec 2001: Permanent position as researcher at the Institute for Soil Genesis and Ecology - National Research Council (CNR-IGES), in Florence.

Since 1994  he has  been responsible for  soil surveys and  teaching  activities in Italy and developing countries (Kenya, Ethiopia, Niger) and has been contract professor of Pedology at the Natural Sciences Faculty of the University of Florence in 2007 and 2008.

2013 - 2014 Postdoctoral reasercher (part-time 50%)  at the Leibniz-Zentrum für Agrarlandschaftsforschung (ZALF), Müncheberg, Germania  within the framework of the EU-FP7 project CLAIM (Supporting the role of the Common agricultural policy in LAndscape valorisation: Improving the knowledge base of the contribution of landscape Management to the rural economy)
