Research focused on studying interactions between the biosphere and the atmosphere at local (with towers) and regional (with aircraft) scale, on natural ecosystems and urban areas.


  • Environmental Engeneering degree at University of Florence (Italy) in 1998
  • PhD in Ecology and Environmental Systems University of Udine (Italy) in 2003


Scientific highlights:

  • development and validation of the aircraft flux measurements methodology  (Gioli et al 2004; Gioli et al 2006).
  • development of upscale methods to derive regional scale carbon balance (Miglietta et al 2006; Miglietta et al 2009).
  • Using aircraft regional fluxes as a validation toll for atmospheric and ecosystem modelling (Perez-Landa et al 2007a, 2007b, Sarrat et al 2009, Maselli et al 2010)
  • study of interactions between surface and PBL fluxes (de Arellano et al, 2004)
  • Remote sensing systems (Papale et al 2008) and applications (Taylor et al 2007), first solar induced fluorescence measurements at different scales (Rascher et al 2009) and integration of fluorescence with carbon exchange (Damm et al 2010)
  • Urban areas emission assessment and source partitioning (Matese et al 2009; Gioli et al 2012)
