History of the Institute

The branch of the Institute of Biometeorology in Florence (formerly Institute of Environmental and Remote Sensing Applied to Agriculture – IATA) was established at the end of the 1970s.The mission of the Institute was to conduct research in the sector of meteorology applied to agriculture and the environment.

More than 30 years of activities and participation in international research and consulting initiatives have enabled IBIMET to address - and often anticipate - climate change issues through a continuous updating of scientific and technical expertize. Nowadays IBIMET studies, designs and develops methodologies such as satellite remote sensing and GIS (Geographic Information Systems), as well as numerical models that are applied to agricultural crops and ecosystems, and meteorology applied to forecasting systems.
